A few months ago, a client came to me with one very specific reason for traveling to Morocco: they wanted to be in Tangier on August 2, 2027, for the total solar eclipse.
We started planning 14 months in advance. They had seven days in Morocco, one non-negotiable date, and no idea yet what the trip around it should look like.

I know Tangier extremely well, so I started where most people wouldn’t think to start: sourcing private rentals in the exact right location close enough to the centerline, quiet enough to actually experience the moment as it deserves to be experienced, not from a crowd. With only seven days to work with, every day mattered, so I proposed the precise arrival day and the exact airport that would give them the smoothest possible entry into the trip, without losing a single one of those seven days to logistics. Why Tangier and Why This Eclipse?
On the morning of August 2, 2027, the sky over Tangier will go dark in daylight. The centerline of the eclipse passes just south of the city, and at around 9:44am local time, the sun will disappear for roughly four minutes and fifty-one seconds; one of the longest total solar eclipses of the entire 21st century.
What makes this one rare isn’t just its length. Morocco last saw a total solar eclipse in 1900, and the next one isn’t due until the 2400s meaning this is a once-in-several-lifetimes event for the country. The path of totality crosses northern Morocco, taking in Tangier, Tétouan, and Chefchaouen, but Tangier’s position near the centerline, combined with a roughly 79% clear-sky probability based on decades of weather data, makes it one of the most reliable and most requested viewing points on the whole path.
That reliability is precisely why the finest locations were disappearing so early. Much of what’s available in Tangier for the eclipse hasn’t even been released yet, and the rest is already spoken for. Waiting on a date like this is a real risk not just to availability, but to price. That’s exactly the kind of window where knowing the city, not just the listings, makes the difference.
From Five Minutes to a Morocco Journey
With the arrival day, the rental, and the transportation in place, the real conversation started: what to do with the rest of the week.
